Skannist User Guide

Welcome to Skannist! This guide will help you get the most out of your personal food scanner.

1. Getting Started
Privacy Guarantee: Your data never leaves your device. Skannist does not use cloud accounts, trackers, or analytics.

Scanning a Product

  1. Open Skannist. The camera will activate automatically.
  2. Point your camera at a product's barcode.
  3. Hold steady until the scanner detects the code.
  4. Instant Result:
    • Green Card: Safe for you.
    • Grey Card: No specific warnings.
    • Red Card: Conflicts with your dietary needs.

The Scan Screen

  • Flashlight: Tap the flash icon to toggle light.
  • Manual Entry: Tap the Keyboard Icon to type barcodes.
  • Profile: Tap your avatar to manage settings.
2. Understanding Results

Safety Status

  • Safe (Green): No conflicts found.
  • Warning (Red): Contains something to avoid!

Nutritional Scores

  • Nutri-Score (A-E): Nutritional quality. 'A' is best.
  • NOVA Group (1-4): Processing level. 1 is minimal, 4 is ultra-processed.
  • Eco-Score (A-E): Environmental impact.

Ingredients & Allergens

Allergens are highlighted in bold. Additives are color-coded by risk level.

3. Profiles & Personalization

Create profiles for yourself, family, or specific goals.

Managing Profiles

  • Switching: Tap the profile icon in the top corner.
  • Creating: Go to Settings > Profile Management.

Customizing Your Profile

  • Diets: Toggle Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, etc.
  • Allergens: Enable specific allergens like Peanuts or Milk.
  • Nutritional Limits: Set custom thresholds (e.g., Max Sugar).
  • Blocked Ingredients: Add specific ingredients to avoid (e.g., "Palm Oil").
4. Groups

Scan for the whole family contextually.

Group Scanning

  1. Create a Group in Profile > Groups.
  2. Toggle Group Scan on the Home Screen.
  3. Scan a product to check against everyone's rules at once.
5. Offline Data

Skannist works completely offline with a downloaded database.

Setup

  1. Go to Settings > Offline Data.
  2. Tap Download Offline Data (~1.4GB compressed).
  3. Wait for the Indexing Process. Do not close the app.

Updates

Update manually via the circular refresh button or enable Auto-Update to download changes over Wi-Fi.

6. Search, History & Favorites
  • Search: Tap the Magnifying Glass to search by name/brand.
  • History: Tap the Clock Icon to see recent scans.
  • Favorites: Tap the Heart Icon on any result to save it.
7. Contributing

If a product is unknown, you can add it to the Open Food Facts database directly from the app.

  1. Tap Add Product.
  2. Take photos of the Front, Ingredients, and Nutrition.
  3. Enter Name and Brand, then Submit.
8. Shopping List
  • Add: Tap "Add to List" on any product.
  • View: Tap the Shopping Cart icon.
  • Share: Generate a QR code to share your list instantly with another user.
9. Settings & Accessibility
  • Themes: Light, Dark, or System.
  • Color Vision: Modes for Protanopia, Deuteranopia, etc.
  • Voice Alerts: Text-to-Speech for results.
10. Troubleshooting
  • Camera Focus: Tap screen to focus. Use flashlight if dark.
  • Product Not Found: Update database or add the product.
